Meaning and Purpose: Classification codes are used to make sure that no audience is exposed to an inappropriate film based on their age. The BBFC provides and controls these codes before they are released to the public and judges them based on the content in the film. The following list shows the potential codes and what they mean.
U is for “universal,” and it means that virtually anyone can view the content in this film.
PG is for “parental guidance,” and it means that parents should watch the film with their children to ensure that if they don’t want their children to see something, they can remove them.
12 and 12A are films made for children 12 and over. This takes some of the control away from parents by determining that children under 12 are definitely too young to view the content. There are similar ratings for people aged 15 and over and 18 and over.
Some of the distinguishing factors for each of these are the level of strong language, violence, sexual activity, drug use, blood and gore, sexual violence, and discriminatory behaviour. The more these are used, the higher the rating gets.
R18 rating means the movie can only be viewed by those 18 and older, and only in “restricted” settings. These settings have to have specific licenses to show these films and have to ensure their audience is older than 18.
Audience Feedback:
After the cast and crew watched the film, everyone was very excited to see how the work we had done turned out. There was some criticism that was passed because everyone had different visions in their minds even though I was ultimately in charge of editing. The feedback included the suggested rating of 12. The entire film is centered around content intended for adults, from smoking to obsessing over women to following women and even attacking them. Although the film has a potentially happy ending if the woman is saved, and even though much of the violence is more implied than it is actually shown, the fact that the entire film shows some sort of disturbing footage and nothing else might give younger minds the idea that these kinds of thoughts and behaviours can be completely consuming. There is a suggestion of violence although there was no present violence.
